In 2011, I has hired to lead the Emerging Payment Products development team within the Global Network Business area of American Express. While I had been with the company for more than 15 years at the time, it had mostly been on the business development side. Product development was new ground for me. What made my transition to this new world easier than it could have been was working with Rich Hearn.
At the time, Rich was under contract to help project manage the technical development of contactless open payment at the fare gate in mass transit. As a member of the Core Team, Rich played the critical role of liaison between the business teams and the technical and software development teams. He had the keen ability to discuss our needs and goals and then interpret those for the teams that would ultimately write the code and build the functionality to support them. Rich also managed our budget and one of my fond recollections was brainstorming with Rich how we could creatively apply the funds we were given to accomplish more.
Although Rich was a contractor and his engagement limited, one would never know it. He was fully a member of our team, fully invested in our daily struggle to overcome challenges, brainstorm ways around roadblocks, and keep our project on track to meet our goals.
